Our special guest for 2017 was Professor Malcolm Longair CBE, FRS, FRSE. Professor Longair is an Emeritus Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy and was head of the the Cavendish Laboratory between 1997 and 2005. He has served on and chaired many international committees, boards and panels, working with both NASA and the European Space Agency. He has received much recognition for his work over the years, including a CBE in the millennium honours list for his services to astronomy and cosmology. Professor Longair gave us a wonderful speech about the history of the Cavendish Laboratory, elaborating specifically upon the many Caians who were instrumental in its story, as well as some personal tales of his experiences with Caian physicists.
